As the founder and designer behind Engayla, I’ve cultivated a unique space, an artistic boutique in the fashion world – an artistic home studio fashion boutique that blends German precision with American diversity. Born in Germany and transplanted to the United States in the 1990s, I’ve created a brand that reflects both my heritage and my journey.

The name “Engayla” is the German pronunciation of Angela, my given name. It embodies the fusion of cultures that defines my work – rooted in European traditions yet embracing the vibrant diversity of America. This cultural merger creates the foundation of my design philosophy and is reflected in every piece I design.

Design Philosophy and Process

At Engayla, each garment is a testament to the art of slow fashion. The design process begins with inspiration – sometimes from a client’s story, other times from the textures and colors of carefully selected fabrics. I sketch designs by hand, allowing ideas to flow freely onto paper before bringing them to life.

My construction methods blend traditional European tailoring with American patternmaing techniques. I prefer clean lines and often use French seams or bound edges for a polished interior finish. While I occasionally incorporate complex techniques for special pieces, my general approach favors simplicity and lets the quality of materials and cut speak for themselves.

I rarely use linings, preferring instead to finish seams impeccably so that the garment is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. Closures are chosen carefully – sometimes hidden for a sleek look, other times collecting different, unique vintage buttons featured as design elements.

Creating a Complete Look

Beyond individual garments, I focus on creating cohesive collections that allow for versatile styling. This includes designing complementary jewelry and accessories. In my jewelry work, I combine beads, silver, and found objects to create pieces that enhance the garments.
